How a trumpet works

http://www.angelfire.com/band/vhstrumpets/pages/how.html

  •  Mouthpiece- player blows and vibrates their lips to make a sound
  • Valves- control the flow of air in different directions (affects the trumpet's pitch)
  • --> once air leaves the valve area, it travels through the tubing towards the funnel (amplifies and resonates the sound)
  • *sound exits through the funnel and sound is refined*
  • Pipe- shorter, higher sounds; lengthened, lower pitch
 Playing:
1) steam - without blowing, no sound will be produced
2) lips - it has to vibrate quickly in a circular position
3) position of lips - tight/loose (create different pitches)
Vibration - higher notes, lips are tighter and opening is very small - lowr notes, lips are more loose and relaxed ( vibrates more slowly )

  • Tube length is inversely proportional to the wave length
  •  Standard length of a trumpet is 148 cm
  • Frequency is 170 Hz - 1K
  •  Tube length = speed of sound divided by (2 x frequency) + tube diameter divided by 2 (Speed of sound is 13150.270)
